JAMAICAN

Oshu’s Multilingual Website is finally up and running! We would like to express our gratitude for them providing this “Oshu Introduced by Foreign Residents” corner. Thank you very much.

We hope that foreign residents in Oshu, as well as friends living overseas who look at this site will come to understand just how great Oshu really is through this corner.

On October 20 (Saturday), we, the members of HIME-TEAM (Team Princess), went to a quaint restaurant here in Oshu called JAMAICAN to learn more about it.

In the spirit of HIME-TEAM, we all took on nicknames after the team name. We are HIME (from Korea), YUME (from China), IME (from Thailand) and RAME (from Indonesia).

jyamaican RAME, from Indonesia, said, “There’s a little place right here in Oshu where we can eat curries from Jamaica and Indonesia, as well as various other ethnic dishes. I’d really like to go there.” Everyone else was interested so we went for lunch.

The restaurant is decorated with Jamaican flags, magazines, photographs and other little things. The atmosphere really makes you feel like you are in another country. You can choose to sit on tatami mats, at a regular table, at the counter, or even out in a little garden. It is quite spacious and you can eat at your leisure.

jyamaican HIME-TEAM had Jerk Chicken with rice on the side (¥1,000), Boiled Ackee Tomatoes (¥780), Capcay (¥780), Mi Goreng (¥780) and the lunch curry, which includes a salad bar and drink (\880 on Saturdays and Holidays, \800 on weekdays).

Each dish looks as if it was adapted to Japanese tastes. Everything was so easy to eat and delicious, a taste that would be difficult to recreate at home.

We are especially thankful that the extremely busy owner was gracious enough to come out from the kitchen and be interviewed by the lovely HIME-TEAM.

jyamaican We learned that the owner is a curry enthusiast, so he quit his job as a company employee and fled to Jamaica to train at a local restaurant. Fifteen years ago he opened his first restaurant within Isawa Hospital. Five years later he opened the restaurant in Miyashita-cho. He is especially proud of the tastes he was able to create for Jerk Chicken and Jerk Pork after studying so hard. Most of the spices he uses are procured when he takes trips to Jamaica.

It was wonderful to have this opportunity to taste the flavors and atmosphere of another country. HIME-TEAM had a great time chatting about raising children and exchanging information on living here.

There were also many rare bottles lined up on the counter. We would love to go drinking some night in the future.
